Terms of use

Slate, a trading journal · Last changed: 7 October 2026

Draft. This text describes how the service works today; it has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer.

These terms are the agreement between you and Michael Wright, Stanmer Court, Brighton BN1 9PU, United Kingdom (“we”), who runs Slate. By creating an account you accept them. Please read them: they’re short.

Slate isn’t offered in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway yet, so accounts can’t be made from there for now. It is open in the UK, Switzerland and elsewhere.

1. What Slate is

Slate is a journal for your own trades: you log them or bring them in from your broker, and the app works out results and patterns from them. Its access to your broker is read-only: it can never place trades or move money, and it doesn’t hold money or connect to anything that can.

2. Not financial advice

Everything Slate shows describes your own past trades. None of it is financial, investment or tax advice, or a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Past results say nothing certain about the future. Your trading decisions are yours alone.

3. Your figures

The app’s figures are only as right as the trades in it. Imports read your broker’s records as the broker gives them, and some brokers and features are marked “still being tested”. Exchange rates are the European Central Bank’s reference rates for the day a trade opened. Check anything important against your broker’s own statements; for tax, always use those.

4. Your account

5. Free trial and subscription

6. Changes and availability

We work to keep Slate running and your data safe, but we can’t promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change or improve features. If we ever stop the service, we’ll tell you at least 60 days ahead, so you can download your data.

7. Ending

You can delete your account at any time in Settings. We may close an account that seriously breaks these terms, after telling you why, except where the law or safety requires us to act at once.

8. Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for trading losses or decisions made with the help of the app, or for indirect damage. Our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, for harm caused deliberately or by gross negligence, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any rights you have as a consumer that can’t be waived.

9. Law

The law of England and Wales applies. The courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, unless consumer law gives you the right to go to court where you live.
